Demilitarization Operations for Material Potentially Presenting an Explosive Hazard at the Walker Lake Testing Range, Hawthorne Army Depot, NV
- Conducted demilitarization operations associated with MEC and material potentially presenting an explosive hazard (MPPEH)
- Demilitarized and disposed of material documented as safe (MDAS) and scrap metal accumulated during routine clearance sweeps of Walker Lake and a 2015 removal action performed along the southeastern shoreline of Walker Lake
- Performed QC during field activities to ensure quality standards and procedures were met and maintained throughout the duration of the project
- Implemented a three-phase inspection process (preparatory, initial, and follow-up phases) during execution
- Items previously inspected and verified as MDAS by the SUXOS and UXOQCS were stored in sealed and locked containers in the Range Holding Area
- Inspection and certification was conducted under separate contract. Each container was opened, the MDAS removed, and items resembling munitions were cut using mechanical shears, chop saws, and oxygen/propane torches until the item no longer resembled military
- Demilitarization activities were performed by qualified UXO Technicians III/II/I with oversight by a SUXOS and a UXOQCS/SO
- Demilitarized MDAS and scrap metal were transported from the site to Hawthorne Metals Recycling Corporation in sealed and locked containers for final disposal
- KGS prepared final disposition documentation, including chains of custody, weight tickets, DD Form 1348s, and certificates of disposal for each container.
